Reducing speed to reduce deaths

Speed has been identified as a key risk factor in road traffic injuries, influencing both the risk of a road crash as well as the severity of the injuries that result from crashes. In high-income countries such as the UAE, speed contributes to about 30% of deaths on the road. At SMC, we are using data driven solutions to identify locations of excessive speed so that corrective measures (i.e. enforcement) can be put in place and lives saved.

We have developed a data analytics platform that uses 3rd party GPS probe data to automatically identify precise locations where motorists are exceeding the road speed limit. This enables authorities to focus efforts on controlling vehicle speed which can prevent crashes happening and can reduce the impact when they do occur, lessening the severity of injuries sustained by the victims.

The solution enables authorities to quickly view historical road traffic speeds on the road network, assess the traffic speed in areas where static speed cameras are located and quickly identify prime locations for future speed enforcement measures, supported by evidential data to justify the investment.
